The Clock Is Ticking on Expired Subscriptions
If you manage Microsoft license-based subscriptions through the Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) program, there is an important change on the horizon that demands your attention. Microsoft has formally rolled out Extended Service Terms (EST) — a new mechanism designed to prevent abrupt service disruption when a customer's subscription expires.
The enforcement date is May 4, 2026. After that point, expired subscriptions that have not been explicitly renewed or cancelled will automatically transition to EST. That means month-to-month billing at potentially different terms — and if you are not prepared, it could catch both you and your customers off guard.
Here is everything you need to know, and what you should be doing right now.
What Are Extended Service Terms?
Extended Service Terms are Microsoft's answer to a long-standing pain point in the CSP ecosystem: what happens when a license-based subscription reaches the end of its term and nobody takes action?
Previously, the result was often an immediate disruption — services would stop, customers would panic, and partners would scramble. EST changes that by providing a flexible, month-to-month, paid continuation option. Instead of a hard stop, the subscription rolls into a month-to-month extension, keeping services running while giving partners and customers time to decide on next steps.
Think of it as a safety net. But like any safety net, it works best when you know it is there and plan for it — rather than falling into it unexpectedly.
Key Dates Every Partner Should Know
Microsoft has been rolling out EST capabilities in stages. Here is the timeline:
- February 16, 2026 — New EST options became available in Partner Center. Partners can now update subscriptions to renew to term, transition to EST, or cancel.
- February 27, 2026 — Microsoft released a new EST download feature in Partner Center, allowing partners to export a list of all subscriptions set to EST across all customers.
- March 13, 2026 — EST options become available for specialized offers (updated from the originally announced March 9 date).
- May 4, 2026 — Enforcement begins. All EST-eligible subscriptions that have not been explicitly managed will automatically enter Extended Service Terms.
The window between now and May 4 is your opportunity to get ahead of this. Do not wait until enforcement day to discover which subscriptions are affected.
The New EST Download Feature: Your Best Friend Right Now
One of the most useful tools Microsoft has introduced in this rollout is the EST download capability, available since February 27, 2026. This feature lets you download a complete list of subscriptions set to EST across your entire customer base.
Why does this matter? Because most partners manage hundreds or thousands of subscriptions. Manually checking each one is not realistic. The download gives you a clear, filterable view of every subscription heading toward EST, so you can:
- Identify at-risk subscriptions — See exactly which customers and subscriptions are set to roll into month-to-month EST billing.
- Prioritize conversations — Focus your outreach on customers where EST may not be the best option.
- Take action proactively — Update subscriptions to renew, cancel, or confirm EST before enforcement kicks in.
What Should Partners Do Right Now?
With less than two months until enforcement, here is a practical action plan:
1. Download Your EST Report
Log into Partner Center and use the new EST download feature. Export the full list of subscriptions set to EST and review it with your team. This is your starting point.
2. Review Each Subscription
For every subscription on the list, decide the best path forward:
- Renew to term — If the customer wants to continue with a standard commitment, renew the subscription before it expires.
- Transition to EST — If the customer needs flexibility or is evaluating their options, EST provides a month-to-month bridge.
- Cancel — If the subscription is no longer needed, cancel it cleanly before enforcement to avoid unexpected charges.
3. Talk to Your Customers
This is not just a back-office exercise. Your customers need to understand what is happening. Many may not be aware that their subscriptions are approaching end-of-term, and they certainly will not appreciate surprise billing changes.
Have proactive conversations now. Explain the options. Help them choose what makes sense for their business. This is an opportunity to demonstrate value as a trusted advisor — not just a license reseller.
4. Coordinate with Your Technical Teams
If you plan to make bulk changes — renewing, cancelling, or confirming EST across many subscriptions — coordinate with your technical teams early. Test the process, understand the API calls if you are automating, and make sure your billing systems are aligned.
5. Mark May 4 on Your Calendar
Enforcement is not a soft deadline. After May 4, 2026, any subscription that has not been explicitly managed will automatically enter EST. Make sure you have completed your review well before that date.
Specialized Offers: Updated Timeline
Microsoft also announced a change to the EST availability for specialized offers. The original date of March 9 has been pushed to March 13, 2026. If you work with specialized offer subscriptions, take note — you will have a few extra days to prepare, but the May 4 enforcement date still applies across the board.
